This is exactly why I stopped calling what I do HR leadership coaching and started calling it HR Mentorship. I’m not a coach, I’m a leader who has been there and is teaching HR professionals what I have learned. 🫶🏻
This hits home. I’ve only hired one coach in 30 years and realized in 2020 that I wanted and needed a mentor. I’ve been actively looking for her since. This is an encouragement to keep looking. The life alignment piece has been the hardest to find (kids, values, purpose with profit rather than all about money).
I feel incredibly grateful to have a mentor exactly as you described. She is fully embodied. It makes investing in everything she creates a no brainer. I'm glad you found a good one, too. Your mentor is one many successful women have learned from and continue to.

I would argue we all need mentorship no matter what stage we are at. Mentors are people have real experience and can share their wisdom to help us advance to where we are looking to go. (Agree with all of your points on how to align yourself with the right one.)
Coaching plays a different role - and is not needed at every turn, but is also necessary. It’s deep, it’s reflective, it’s a tailored experience that takes someone inward to help them create awareness, transform and elevate.
Both have a role - and they are not one and the same.

A coach who is certified doesn’t tell you what to do. A mentor does. I’m sick and tired of seeing people call themselves coaches when they actually are mentors so good for you to call it for what it is!

Amen, a good coach is a mentor who embodies all aspects of the life you want to design for yourself. Not someone who does the same thing necessarily, but the holistic approach to life is so important because we all know whether we admit it or not how we do anything is how we do everything!
I constantly struggle with what to call myself, especially as the term “coach” has been so diluted by all the so-called coaches who are actually mentors or consultants. A certified coach is more of a guide or a mirror that can see your patterns and your perception filters and help you through a healing process of shedding who you are not - that’s how I see myself. No idea what to call that though! So I don’t think it’s a choice between a mentor or a (certified) coach because different needs require different approaches. Depends if someone is looking for healing (which can result in scaling their biz) or looking to scale their biz (which can also result in healing)!

I think one of the hardest parts is getting honest about what kind of life you're actually trying to build.
It's easy to admire someone's results. It's much more important to ask whether you'd want the life, priorities, and tradeoffs that came with them.

Hence why I have never liked calling myself a coach. I've never felt comfortable with that term. I am a specialist.
